Art 101 Creativity Art Set, Assorted Colors, 173 Pieces (53173)

This review is being written as a comparison to other media types., i.e color pencils, gel pens, and traditional colored markers. After putting them to the test, I can honestly state that by comparison, the Weisbrandt UltraColor hard tip brush pens are superior to the others previously use. They have a similar feel to a flair marker, but the overall quality is much better. The clear packaging allows you a first look at the 12 colors with a brief description -- "Micro Pigment Ink * Flexible Brush Tip * Water-proof and Fade-proof. Each pen has a beautiful rich vibrant color and I was eager to use them. After testing every color and using them for some time, I noticed that the green and pink pens seemed to be a little dryer. However, the more they were used, the performance became the same as the other colors. I note this because they were new and just needed a little breaking in. The pens have a nice brush stroke making it easy to stay within the lines. At no point did the pens slip off the page as they do with gel pens. Also worth noting is depending on your emphasis of the brush stoke applied--a color shading is possible. I did not expect that with these brush pens but I prefer it as some light/dark shading is needed at times depending on the area that is being colored liked trees and leaves. However, if a dark heavy application is desired, minimal bleed through is possible. As the packaging states, they are water and fade proof as there was no smudging at all. Lastly, I tested them as a writing pen for lettering and was pleased with the outcome. he lettering looked great! For the quality and price of these pens, I would highly recommend them. Trust me, I have paid a lot of money for other media types that have not performed this well! Test them out for yourself, you will not be disappointed!

Purchased this as a gift for my mother in-law who wanted to try doing some drawings. They made a nice gift as there is a nice selection of supplies in a pretty wooden box.

Are both rows of the crayons supposed to be exactly the same? We got 2 identical crayons of 35 colors. They are even laid out one above the other. I thought we would get 70 colors within 70 crayons. The colored pencils are like the crayons - 36 pencils, 25 colors, 11 repeats. Maybe because they are the most common colors, they figure they'll get used the most and you need 2? There were also a few of the watercolors that came unglued and were floating around within the palette. No biggie, I'd rather that than try to paint with glue. Besides, the palette acted as a perfect cover to keep the set contained. The markers (20 markers, 20 colors) and oil pastels (12 pastels, 12 colors) were what I expected. The case is beautiful wood-grain and lays flat when opened - perfect. Make sure you close it with the crayons on the bottom, otherwise the top falls out. BTW, 5 of the "pieces" are paper clips, and one is apparently the hunk of scotch tape to hold them in the divet. That's the only way it adds up to 173, including the case. It still worked as a Christmas Day gift - thanks, Santa! - but it just wasn't quite what I thought it would be.

I got this for my 5 year old. He LOVES THIS thing. He’s sad that his paints are almost gone. I haven’t checked to see if they have replacements for that paint section for him. He loves that he can close his “brief case” and take it with him on the road or back and forth from his room to the dinning room to color and draw. He was super happy when he saw it and opened it up. This is the perfect gift for any of your little artists.

I think I have bought 5 of these this holiday season—2 for church donation for children’s Christmas gifts, one for a Christmas gift as a Shriners Hospital Donation, two for grandchildren. It is a beautiful set on its own, but I have individualized the gifts by buying an appropriate coloring book to add to the gift. When it is opened, it breath-taking!

My 10 year old (almost 11), just loves this kit. She uses these nice quality art supplies on almost every drawing project she does. My 14 year old does too and they both love the set. It was a great purchase (Christmas 2013) that I would recommend for any responsible budding artist. It provides many options for not too much money. It is a great way to see if something of even higher quality and expense is justified. My wife and I felt this was a great buy. The items hold up well and the case is very nice to keep it all together.
