Q: Would this be good for photographing a toddler, mostly indoors and how is the video?

It's a lot more camera than is necessary for taking pix of a little kid--it's an extremely versatile camera with many manual adjustments available, but it's also a great point & shoot camera when set to "automatic". I have only used the video a couple of times, which of course eats up a lot of the sim card's capacity. It seems to be OK, but if I wanted a video camera, I'd buy a video camera.

This camera (G12) uses a proprietary Canon battery NB7L. However, third-party versions are also available from around $10. The battery has a high capacity and you can take hundreds of pictures or around 1.5 hours of video on a single charge.

Q: Can the battery be charged in camera via the USB cable?

No. The USB cable is for transferring pictures to your computer.
